Well, I've changed ClassicExplorer's settings to "show free space and file size" but not "show detailed info for single selection".
Free space is now always shown, even if in a variable position. Better than nothing.

Thanks. Didn't know that. It could be a halfway solution, though it can't be used to configure statusbar parts, like always having things indicated in fixed locations. Haven't managed to get it to work yet. Is there a way to get it to use AllFileSystemObjects without tweaking all type-specific InfoT...

Is there a way to customize the details shown in the Explorer statusbar beyond the 3 options in the settings?
I'm thinking, something like a format string for selected/unselected defining text and variables to show, and statusbar segments.

The QTTabBar link in the first post is to the SourceForge project, which is a mostly inactive branch. The original is at http://qttabbar.wikidot.com

And it's *Tab*, not *Tabs*. :)

Are you using the classic style or the win7 style? Classic. For shortcuts inside subfolders located in the Start Menu folder, when you launch them by browsing, they are not added to the Recent list. What could also be nice, as an extra, is an option to collect MRUs from the MFU db, which I assume i...

I've noticed that these not-under-Programs shortcuts are added as MRU if ran from the search box, rather than by clicking them in their submenus. I had the impression this didn't happen initially, but I could be wrong. I tried adding a directory junction or symlink under "Programs" that li...

I'm on v3.9.3. "Pinned" is set to "Use Start Menu folder". Indeed, items directly in the root don't need to show as MRU, my mistake. :) But items that descend from it, rather than from Programs, do need to be MRUed. My menu is organized into categories that start at the root, not...

The "recent programs" list only collects items from under "Programs" but not items at the root level or that descend from it not through "Programs". Is there a way to get also these to show?

You mean WinKey by itself is also registered as a hotkey, but that one triggers on release? Interesting.

I'll join in. Thanks, Ivo, for Classic Shell.

On topic of improving Win8, apparently Acer is going to preinstall a start menu alternative in their computers: http://arstechnica.com/information-tech ... tall-apps/

It'd be useful if Search_background and related skin options could be used also in non-Windows 7 style skins. Perhaps the skin won't work well if the search box is moved, but I think it's anyway likely to be at the left of the main menu, and most likely at the bottom. Currently it doesn't work corre...

I'm trying to customize the main menu search box in a .skin file, and not .skin7. Settings such as "Search_background" seem ineffective. Is it only supported in .skin7? If so, is there a way to get a classic 2 row behavior using a .skin7? BTW, is there somewhere documentation for the new ....

How's WinKey handled to both get focus and detect release?

I don't know. :) The main thing was the start menu going above the submenu (and taskbar).

But then, WinKey by itself acts on release to open the menu, as it does without Classic Shell to switch to the the Start Screen.

If it's about a hook doing trouble and WM_HOTKEY only being sent on press, I guess that's another sort of problem/dilemma.

Would it be possible to change Shift-Win to act on release rather than press? Right now it can conflict with Shift-Win key combinations, like Shift-Win-Up. It's possible to avoid the action by pressing the Win key first, then Shift, but I do happen to press Shift first in many cases. If there's a re...

Happens with version 3.9.0 - 3.9.1. Right clicking the Apps entry in the base menu when the Apps submenu is open brings the base level start menu on top, covering the Apps submenu, which remains open. The start menu is also on top of the taskbar, although the overlap is just a pixel or the menu shad...

I use mostly Opera. But I'm not sure the changes post version 12 are welcome. It's also kinda sad that they gave up on their own layout engine.
I hope they at least fix some GUI issues before moving on past v12+, but I somehow doubt it.

I think the best long term solution would be if someone developed a full shell replacement (remember LiteStep?) that allows classic Windows-like look and behavior by default. That way people would be free to upgrade to modern OSes for the improvements under the hood, without having to take it togeth...
