Thanks for the help, but I think at this point the effort involved just isn't worth the results. I'm just going to try to live with it looking chunky.
Take care. |

I got the font changed, but the padding around the username (yes, I should have said that rather than caption) is stumping me. I don't use the user picture so I don't need it to be nearly so chunky. Here's the before and after of what I'm looking for: |

That's not really "effortless", though. If you want people to switch to CSM on Win7, I think it's worth it to grease the wheels.
But I'll leave it at that. |

You can include all of those. Create CustomItems. Edit them and click on the Link dropdown. There should be choices for My Music, My Videos and Network. |

Thanks for the offer, but I'll take a crack at it.
Ivo: Yeah, I understand your point. But you had a feature suggestion forum so I'm... suggesting features. Thanks again. |

And by that time Win7 will probably be long gone and it'll be a moot point! ![Very Happy :D](images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif) |

Cool, thanks for the info. Does this mean "no" on the feature, though? I assume there are lots of settings which are in CSM which you could just change by editing the skin file as well. |

Makes sense. Though on the last one I'd simply say you wouldn't have to use the same location on every OS. But anyway, yeah, that explanation otherwise makes sense and I'm satisfied. Thanks for answering.
Just one more thing - how about a pinned locations import in Windows 7? ![Very Happy :D](images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif) |

One thing I always hated about the default start menu top caption was the huge font it uses and the chunky amounts of padding it has around the text. It'd be nice to be able to adjust both. |

Ah, okay. I read that but thought it wouldn't have the submenus. Thanks. It still would be quite slick for it to be able to use the central pinned items location, though. Less hassle for people making the switch. Not fun re-pinning all those items. X) |

It doesn't break Fitt's law if it's an OPTION. Otherwise, countless other options in CSM do, too. ;) And no, the other ways don't help because I'm trying to have it maintain the original win8 behavior, not have to teach everyone in our office that if they control a machine where I've installed CSM, ... |

I had read that different versions of classic shell could change the registry structure and so it wasn't the best way to go. I perhaps incorrectly assumed the xml would be a little more generic and less prone to that. What I'm actually thinking now is I just need a regular job to overwrite the curre... |

Cool. For now I've set the user name text to %username%@%computername%. There's no variable for the operating system version, unfortunately, so I can't do the same with the left caption without hardcoding it. Which would be bad, because I've got a single settings.xml file that I'm using to configure... |

I'd love to have an option to include the computer name. Either at the top or to the left. Would want it in addition to including the OS version, not replacing it. It would be helpful because I work on a lot of machines remotely and its good to have a reminder.
Thanks! |

I've installed CSM on a bunch of windows 2012 machines I administer. To keep the other admin from griping, I've left the default corner hover behavior on even though I hate it. I wish I could make CSM leave a little blank space to the left of its icon. I want this because I often move the mouse too ... |

I wish pinning was supported as well. Pinned items can have automatic submenus provided by the program. For example when you pin Remote Desktop Connection, the submenu has all the recent machines you connected to. Firefox shows your frequently visited sites and tasks. I just installed Classic Start ... |

It would be helpful if you could pass an xml file to the installer to have it load that just like it would be if you chose "Load from XML file". That, along with silent install options that would let you configure stuff like whether to add a start menu folder, auto-check for updates, etc. ... |
