In the "RUN" command on the start menu I used to see suggestions or a drop down history if you clicked the little arrow on the right. Now nothing shows up in the history. Is there a way to enable history on the Classic Start or perhaps in the registry?

Classic Shell does not control the contents of the Run dialog.
This is possibly linked to the Windows settings for tracking recently used programs.

It is also related to the Windows jumplist/recent documents setting in some versions of Windows.

I did a registry edit.

In HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU there was no values. So I added values string words a b c d etc and in those string words added regedit\1 cmd\1 shell:startup\1 services.msc\1 and so on for each of the corresponding letters. and then at the bottom added another string value MRUList and for that I added abcd and closed regedit.

Now, when I look at the run, the above show up when I start typing but still don't show up on the actual history (arrow key) if you click on it. Haven't rebooted yet, so will see....

Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.
Look for a value named "Start_TrackProgs". Is it 0 or 1?

That's your problem - tracking the programs is disabled. You can try setting it to 1, but ideally you should find the setting in Windows and turn it on. Depending on your version of Windows, it is either in the taskbar properties or in the start menu properties.

Version is Windows 10. They did away with the "Start' settings in the taskbar in Windows 10. Used to be a tab when you right clicked taskbar and under "Jump List" (Windows 8.1) was a box to check to store recently opened programs and store and display recently opened items in the Jump List. That is not there in Windows 10.

So, in recap, in Windows 10, there are not "START" menu options of saving recent files as there are no options at all for the start menu. Strange that they (Microsoft) did it this way.

BTY a big THANKS Ivo !!! That did it!! I changed the value from 0 to 1 and now the arrow on the run shows the history like it did on my 8.1 machine.

I think in Windows 10 the settings is in the personalization menu.
Right-click on the taskbar, select Personalize, then go to Start. There is a setting "Show most used apps".

Close... in Windows 10 right click on the desktop (not taskbar...there is no"start" there) and choose Personalize. When that PC Setting shows up click the <- arrow at the top and in that selection is the "Start". Click that. Mines is already "ON" for the "Show most used apps" and I think it was like that before I changed the registry.
