I want to make sure I'm reading the How to create or set a custom Start button easily"" found here: http://goo.gl/n5LErg correctly.

Classic Shell's Start Orbs are all contained in 1 png file. Unlike other Start Menu Replacements where each state is it's own image.

The PNG itself is roughly 1w x 3h. With a completely transparent background.

  • The topmost image is the Normal state.
  • The middle image is the Hovered state.
  • The bottom is the Pressed state.

Does it matter how much padding there is in between the images and the top, bottom and sides of the PNG? If there is a specific form that should be followed to get them to work properly, please let me know what they are!

Thanks a lot, I'm sure someone will be able to answer me!

The padding determines how much space there will be on the left and the right of the image when it is placed on the taskbar. The left/right padding matters for horizontal taskbars and top/bottom padding is for the vertical taskbars.
Also since the image is centered on the taskbar, asymmetrical padding will move it up or down.

Wait, what? Is padding included in the hitbox for the Start Button or not? I thought it was .-.

How much padding, in terms of pixels would you say the average icon should have on top, bottom, sides and in between the states? I don't want to keep working on this project only to find out it's totally fugly because of the padding, you know?

That depends on the button. Also, note that there's a size option, which allows the button to be scaled in the Classic Shell options.

@padding, the start menu will down-scale any sized image, so the exact pixels in padding is irrelevant. Also classic shell has a setting 'align to corner of the screen' which will take the bottom left pixel for each section, and.. align it to the corner of the screen... (which means you dont have to worry about the padding)
