Just thinking this would make an excellent animated GIF if such buttons were supported :P, inactive would sit there, maybe a little smoke, active would spin, and click would have sub zero pop up :P,

If animated gifs were supported, the user would have to define a repeat frame for each of the 3 states individually (if left blank the animation would play once and freeze at the last state, if you set it to 10 it would play through, then return to the 10th frame and repeat indefinably..,
think i should request this feature?, animated gifs are still a lil hard for most people to make so it might be hard to get many.., but alot of the default ones would look alot nicer with subtle animations

The thing with animations is that they would consume system resources even when the menu is not in use. Your CPU will never go into a low-powered state.
Also AFAIK gifs don't support transparency.

Gif supports 256 colors only, with a transparency.. its not an 8-bit transparency.. gifs look bad..

Gifs should already be obsolete.. 256 colors is already too out-dated... everything is already 32-bit, even the Windows Icons.. Gif was for a bygone era when alot of things were 256, and that seemed normal to us..

APNG support for Orbs would be cool

and since APNG is all done via command line, it would seem it'd be possible to create a sort of APNG interface of your own, built into Clasic Shell... designed around the Open-Source APNG Assembler, APNGasm, http://sourceforge.net/projects/apngasm/files/ or maybe this

you could simply specify a normal APNG command, and it would compile & use that compiled APNG file for the Start Orb..

anyway.. who doesnt want a 32-bit animation with an 8-bit transparency? its ridiculous that APNG isnt already as common and easy to use as Gif, Jpeg, & PNG.. HTML5 widely seems to support APNG, as do most things following HTML5 standards... so, something seems a bit fishy.

I wonder if you could add parameters to individual APNG images to begin on a click, or on a Windows event, or something

@ resource consumption.. im aware.. but some people keep there computer awake all the time anyways for other reasons...
@apng; im asuming it supports everything, from varying transparency to animations to unlimited colors?, but whats the size of an average 10 second apng file? just curious. if its truely better yea gifs should be gone.. but hey everything already works with gifs and not everything works with apng im guessing :P

and besides IF the default (non hover/non click) animation wasnt animated (aka froze at the final frame, then the only time the cpu wouldnt enter sleep is when the user is hovering over the button or is in the start menu cause he just clicked :P

Resource consumption is a serious issue, particularly on devices running on batteries. A well-behaving Windows application should do as little as possible when not in use.

on battery operated devices yes :P, but for those of us with power machines that are constantly plugged in.. and there could always be a note beside the option warning of power usage, or you could make the animations play through once (whenever hovered/clicked/unclicked)

although this particular feature, probably requires more time to implement than its worth :P, and would probably use subtle animations if any personally

apng compiles files for animation and reserves a first image as a default for applications with PNG support but without APNG support

The PNG group officially abandoned the format in 2007, and in the last 6 years have apparently dropped off the face of the planet and have done exactly nothing to implement or develop any sort of 32-bit image animation standard..

its a sad thing... its available and ready to go, its out there just waiting to be used.. it functions & works wonderfully..

It doesnt make any sense that they would abandon it at its final stages, and then not a peep from them in 7years.. especially when so much has happened in that time, and is happening now..

still nothing but silence..

I think it needs to be taken up by the community at large and adopted by the people.. forget those developers. APNG is totally Free & Open Licensed for anyone to implement and use.

its a golden egg, really

Even though Classic Shell is widely appealing to the Windows 8 users, and most windows 8 systems are tablets and laptop devices, its still used widely for Desktops

APNG has several advantages, not the least of all is its beauty. Just like when you watch tv, and suddenly a small preview shows up about what show is coming up next.. totally transparent.. those are shot in Blue or Green Screen then keyed out to transparency, from the Video.. but APNG could look exactly like that, as high quality as you see on those HD TV shows

this means that Companies could offer their own cool interfaces for Start Menu Orbs, or other interactive widgets or gadgets, which, when clicked, begin a high-quality 32-bit Animation with 8-Bit transparency, that makes it look visually stunning..

Its a Great Sales, Marketing & Advertising Opportunity for companies to make cool things that look awesome on your screen when clicked or moused over

they could come built-in to certain computers.. companies could cover half the cost of your device if you buy the "McDonald's" Tablet that has animated Hamburglers when u click certain objects..

anyway.. i just cant see why its not being used.. without going into conspiracy theories
