I just installed the latest beta over 3.6.8 and the result was a different look to the menu, even though the settings appear to be the same. A system restore didn't fix it (Win 8x64). It's been many months since initial set up, but apparently I had reordered and deleted and most of the items from the list Programs - Apps - Documents - Computer - Settings - Search - Help & Support - Run, placing Programs at the bottom. Now all of them are there and I'm not seeing a way to delete and reorder anything in that section. Is there a way? The left side blue with "Windows 8 Pro" wasn't there either. That's easy enough to fix via Skin choices, but the change makes me wonder how much was overridden during the beta install. I'm using the Windows Classic. Thanks,

Since you upgraded from Classic Shell 3.6.8 to the beta, you will have to pick the "Classic with two columns" style now, not the Windows 7 style. What was earlier Windows 7 style is now consolidated under "Classic with two columns" style, while the Windows 7 style is a new one that introduces a menu highly similar to the Windows 7 Start Menu (with All Programs inside an inline treeview).

Once you select Classic with two columns style, you should see your customized Start Menu item order of 3.6.8 which you had set from the 'Customize Start Menu' tab.

Thanks, that helped (with a reinstall of the beta), though the color

There are still two problems, one of which may be a bug:
1) "Apps" is now the first item. I don't use it or want it. Can it be removed? I would like Programs first (and only).

2) In the list above that, the one where items can be removed, removing the bottom entry initially left a big blank space. It didn't go away until I changed another setting, coincidence or not I'm not sure.

You can remove the Apps item from the Customize Start Menu tab.
Not sure about the big blank space. A screenshot would help.

The blank space came back. See screenshot.

That's because you have more stuff in the right column than the left. There is padding added, otherwise the Help and Run items will not fit. The location of the padding is controlled by the COLUMN_PADDING item in each column.

The blank space can also be because you may have set only 3 Recent/Frequent programs to show. Increasing it to 4 will eliminate the blank space.

It looks like adding anything fills the space. Take a look at the screenshot with Apps added back in.

Well, of course. The Apps item fills the gap.
Instead of saying how it works now, tell me how you expect it to work.

Looking at the right column to compensate, I'm finding that Gene1 won't delete from the context menu; My Documents is supposedly open and can't be deleted (rebooted to be sure); <No Text> doesn't show a context menu; Computer doesn't delete; and Recent Items doesn't show show a delete option. Everything below that doesn't have a context menu.

These are system items, most of them are not supposed to have context menus.
You can't delete them from the context menu anyway. You have to remove the items from the "Customize Start Menu" tab.
Maybe you tried to delete Pictures (or something similar), which deleted your actual pictures folder. Don't do that. Edit the right column items from the start menu settings.

Maybe for a future release, Classic Start Menu can support removing items right from the menu itself. There is already the text "Don't display this item" available. If an item is right clicked, it can have this and it will remove it from the Customize tab too?
