Windows 7 SP1 64 bit
Classic Shell 4.0.4
Firewall temporarily disabled

From the Start menu, I select Classic Shell Update. In the subsequent popup I click the "Check now" button. Then a window pops up that says something like Checking for updates and Connecting..., but then quickly disappears. "Failed to check for new version" is then displayed in the Classic Shell Update window.

Is this a bug? It appears that it does not successfully check for a new version. I know that the 4.0.4 I have is the current version, but the message should say I already have the current version if the update check had been successful.

Edit: Uploaded Classic Shell Utility output to Media Fire FileDrop with title "Failed to check for new version from Alan Baxter".

Having the same problem. On 2 machines the check for updates from 4.0.4 says "Up to date" on another machine it says "Failed to check for update". They are all Win 8.1 running on the same LAN.

If I try to get the version file by hand from http://www.classicshell.net/files/updat ... _4.0.4.ver
I get:

404 (Page Not Found) Error

Classic Shell is great, but the check for updates never worked reliably for me. I look forward to an improvement.

The URL should be http://www.classicshell.net/files/updates/update_4.0.4.ver and not http://www.classicshell.net/files/update/update_4.0.4.ver (Note the s in 'updates')

Hi, I joined the party with Classic Shell version 4.2.5. So far, I never got any update notification and clicking "Check now" yields "Failed to check for new version". According to this thread these problems should actually have vanished with Classic Shell 4.1.0?

Windows 10 pro x64, V. 1607
Classic Shell 4.2.5
Firewall temporarily disabled

That's weird. It may be because version 1607 is trying to block Classic Shell.
Manually download the latest version 4.3.0 and see if the check for updates works. It should say "Your version of Classic Shell is up to date".

While I can confirm that version 1607 tried its best to block Classic Shell, the update problem already existed before - and still does. Manually downloaded and installed version 4.3.0 but the behavior didn't change. The dialog "Checking for updates" briefly pops up and the result stays "Failed to check for new version".

So, anything else I can do to solve this problem? Any logs to check?

Can you try Internet Explorer? I think IE uses the system Internet settings, and Firefox my have its own.

I am at a loss then. Unfortunately there are no built-in diagnostics for the version check process.
