Like in this image, can classic shell control the connections with optional switches for airplane mode and so on... The reason its really needed is many win8 only feautures are broken such as Personalize but they are features i can live without however wifi is important ,

The main focus of Classic Shell is user interface. Controlling OS settings like wifi is way out of scope.

So is there a way to turn off the metro interface on wifi/network connections then?

For some reason Microsoft feels the need to shove Metro UI elements in your face nonstop. There are many metro elements I wish I could disable, but it would seem they're just integrated into the system.

But if you're looking for an alternative, I use PE Network Manager. It's certainly not the same, but it gets the job done without Metro.

Actually after further research i found out the windows 8 use %windir%\System32\Control.exe for wifi nowadays as many things the old wifi is still present just no way to re-enable it unless classicshell adds a tweak or registry hack for netcenter.dll . Ivo said if its in windows it can be brought back ....

Edit Thanks rob for the Pe Network program maybe parts from there could be added as a taskbar version of it?
