When I first installed the full set of ClassicShell progs, I soon began getting a small, flickering square, about an inch above and to the right from the bottom-left corner -- in other words, near where the Start Button should be. The square was lighter than the background, and had a cursor arrow blinking in the middle of it, separate from the usual mouse cursor, and immovable. While this little box was flickering, my regular mouse cursor was also flickering and harder to use. At the same time, I noticed that the Start button was gone.

If I manually started the "Start Button" (using the .exe file in Explorer - ugh!), the flickering box and extra cursor-arrow would disappear as the Start button appeared.

This reoccurred with every restart, so I uninstalled the ClassicShell apps, and reinstalled with only the Start Button.

This is an improvement, but I still get a lighter-colored circle on startup, again with a blinking cursor in it, near the bottom-left corner, until I switch into "desktop" display.

At this point it is tolerable, but I believe this is a bug which should be addressed. I'm running a 64-bit version of Win8, on an Asus laptop. Thanks.

Are you saying that you see something shaped like the mouse cursor (the arrow) near the bottom of the screen? If so, it sounds like some program is trying to manipulate the mouse position, maybe to simulate a mouse click. Classic Shell doesn't do that.

Classic Shell tries to simulate pressing Win+D for 5 seconds after login, to force the switch to the desktop. You can disable that from the Windows 8 settings tab and see if that fixes the problem.

Thanks for the reply. I would like to try the solution that you describe. Can you please provide details (for this Win8 beginner) of the change to the Windows 8 Settings tab that you suggest. Thanks.

Right-click on the start button and select Settings.
Select All Settings at the bottom.
Go to the Windows 8 settings tab.
Uncheck "Skip Metro screen".
