i'm not sure what exactly happened, the latest cumulative security update may have changed something in the system, but classic explorer no longer does anything. the up button doesn't appear, the top bar doesn't show file path, the status bar is always empty, file copy/run etc dialog is never expanded by default and so on. the only thing that still seems to work is the toolbar that shows classic explorer config button and the optional buttons.

i tried to reset the settings, but nothing changed. i uninstalled it, then reinstalled, no change. i even tried going back a few versions, but no effect either.

windows 7 ultimate sp1.

note, classic start menu still works.

okay, it seems the bho classes got disabled for some reason. enabling them fixed the problem. thanks.
