So, I use a wireless Microsoft mouse, which installs the Microsoft Mouse-and-Keyboard-Center by itself, via Windows Update. While working nicely on Win7, on Win8 this Center won't recognize my mouse, even if the mouse works. No problem, it's just the mouse for the test machine. (Making my old 32bit Logitech periphery work on 64bit Windows is a much worse pain in the ass and at some point plainly impossible)
However, after installing the Classic Shell 3.9 beta, the start menu would not open up. Instead, it would ask me for a particular file from a setup package, that sounded like the Mouse-and-Keyboard-Center. You know, that Windows98-style "I miss this dll file, point me to where it's at". Aborting did not help.
The only way to finally make the start menu open up was manually installing the whole Mouse and Keyboard Center from the Microsoft Homepage.
I have no idea why this happened, but maybe it helps in some way.
