Hi, in Win 10, Recent places link is now gone from navigation pane of File Explorer and gone from Save As dialogue box. It's incredibly inconvenient for anyone constantly accessing various folders. Can this be restored by Classic Shell in a future release?

Press Win+R and copy-paste this:
shell:::{22877a6d-37a1-461a-91b0-dbda5aaebc99}

It will open Recent folders in Windows 10. (If it doesn't show you "Recent folders" in the left pane, press Ctrl+Shift+E to show it. Now right click it in the navigation pane and choose "Pin to Quick access".

Or right click "Quick Access" itself while Recent Folders is open and click "Pin current folder to Quick access".

Adding to Gaurav:

Changing the "attributes" value data for "Recent" shell folder to 0x30040000 makes it available in the Browse dialogs as well. Check out How to Pin Recent folders or Recent Places to the Navigation Pane in Windows 10 File Explorer - The Winhelponline Blog: http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/pin-r ... -explorer/

Hi guys, I love your program and I'm going to donate!!

I can't seem to pin the folder 'recent places' to the Classic start menu, how to do that?

Thanks!

@Peter890, To pin Recent places to the left column of the menu where the pinned shortcuts are, open Recent Places in Explorer as mentioned above and then drag the "Recent places" (Recent folders) item from the left pane of Explorer over to the Start button, let the menu open and then drop it in the pinned area. Then you can rename it.

Or you can start dragging from Explorer (press left click button and don't let go of it), press Win key to open the Start Menu menu, and drop it to the pinned area.

The setting "Expand folder shortcuts" on the "General Behavior" tab of Start Menu Settings controls if such left column pinned folders show as a link or as a menu.

If you want to instead add Recent Places to the right side column, go to Customize Start Menu tab. Add a Custom item and double click it. The Edit Menu Item dialog will show up. In its "Link" field, copy-paste:
shell:::{22877a6d-37a1-461a-91b0-dbda5aaebc99}

And click OK to save settings.

Thanks. When I do that (I have Win10 64b) and click on it, I get:

Missing link
cannot find link ::{22877a6d-37a1-461a-91b0-dbda5aaebc99} etc. etc.

I'm using the Dutch version. Is that the 6th option from below? It is checked. Also unchecking doesn't help.

There are some minor mistakes in the Ducht translation. Could I help you improving by letting you know. I'm a professional Dutch language user.

There are 3 colons between shell and {......}. Maybe you are entering only two? And you can absolutely suggest any improvements to the Dutch translation.

Yes, 3 colons I meant. Properties read:

:::{22877A6D-37A1-461A-91B0-DBDA5AAEBC99}

Classic Start menu also freezes frequently after having added this item. Think of removing, alas.

And you can absolutely suggest any improvements to the Dutch translation.

Happy to. How or where?

Found a whole bunch of errors in translation. Spent 2 hours looking for them, so consider that my contribution. But: where todeliver them?

I don't understand anything. Where are you getting Missing link or cannot find link? Please post exact steps. Checking/unchecking what doesn't help? Try these steps: http://winaero.com/blog/recent-places-a ... -explorer/

You can post translation errors here in this forum. Just make a new topic for example called "Dutch translation issues" at viewforum.php?f=20 You can post them in a separate forum thread or if there are many long strings, then paste them in a text file and attach/upload it to the post.

I got the menu to work, thanks!
Another question: I would like to pin this menu to the task bar, but if I drag it won't stick. Is there a solution for this?
Also I would like to have it on the right hand side of the menu, next below (or above) to the Recent Items button.

Is this possible, or am I asking for too much, now? ;)

Made also the translation topic.

Another question: In Win 10 if you click on a folder within search results one stays within search results. It doesn't open the new folder itself, Vista did this.
Of course I can right click and choose Open Folder Location (or something), but that's tedious.

Any trick?

Thanks!

You right-click on the file and select "Open file location".

Post subject:  Re: Win 10 "Recent places" is gone from File Exp navigation

That's what I also mentioned in my post.

But is there a way to make that standard?

The search was changed in Windows 7 and I don't know of a way to change it back.

You could search from the Start Menu instead of Explorer. It's the same search.

Post subject:  Re: Win 10 "Recent places" is gone from File Exp navigation

Yes, that's one option.

Just think it's strange that in Explorer you cannot escape from the search context easily.

Is it possible to make a button: "Open file location"?

Post subject:  Re: Win 10 "Recent places" is gone from File Exp navigation

You can add a Custom command/button: explorer.exe /select,"%2"

It'll work if the item is selected in the right pane of Explorer.

Post subject:  Re: Win 10 "Recent places" is gone from File Exp navigation

That's a little bit over my head, can you explain?

Post subject:  Re: Win 10 "Recent places" is gone from File Exp navigation

Open Classic Explorer Settings and go to "Toolbar Buttons" tab. Scroll down in the right column and drag the item called Custom to the left column where you want the button.

Then double click the Custom item in the left column to bring up the Edit Toolbar Item dialog. In the Command field, type:
explorer.exe /select,"%2"

Give it an icon and tooltip and label if you want e.g. Open folder containing selected item. Click OK everywhere to save settings and re-open the Explorer window. %2 in Classic Explorer means currently selected item. So when you select an item in search results and click the button, it will open in a new Explorer window with that item selected, making it easier for you to locate it.
