Microsoft has locked down Windows RT so desktop apps cannot run except the first party ones they allow via Windows Update.

Its a lockdown Issue? I thought it was an incompatibility caused by ARM support?

Well yes if Microsoft allowed running desktop apps on Windows RT without requiring them to be signed, then an ARM version could technically be created/ported. In fact, one of the developers at XDA-Developers forum ported an older open source version of the Classic Shell Start Menu to Windows RT 8.0 when there was a hack possible to run desktop apps on it. The loophole was of course closed by Microsoft with Windows RT 8.1.

oh, so its both :P I knew ports could be made for arm, but I thought that was the primary issue.. so you can actually have classic shell on windows 8 rt if you dont upgrade, or does rt upgrade automatically?

why on earth would they intentionally cripple it? if the backbone is still there anyways?

Because they want you part of the Windows Store ecosystem. Personally, I'm not looking forward to Windows 9.

I still use the store on my main PC, even though I have other options.

Wouldn't It make more sense for them to start including non-metro programs into the store... to lol.
