Hello,
I've been a long time Classic Shell fan (mostly explorer) and with the recent upgrade to windows 8 I've noticed that some options are gone. Most of it doesn't get much in the way but one thing I miss a lot - space/size information from the status bar. I've read somewhere that it's because MS changed how status bar is handled and therefore it's hard/impossible to tweak it - is is correct? Maybe instead of placing it in the statusbar it could be displayed in the toolbar as an item at least (I'm aware it's not perfect but it would be better than nothing...

Yes that's correct. MS modified it in a way that it's not possible. :(

Even as a workaround on the toolbar?

Where to display the information is one thing. Another is to detect when to update it - like when the selection changes. As of now I have not found a way to do detect changes to the selection.

Classic Shellers, if you try the latest beta version of Classic Shell linked from the home page, it now has status bar features of Classic Explorer fully operational on Windows 8!! Ivo found a way out. :)

On Windows 8/8.1, there is a setting in Folder Options -> View tab -> Show status bar.
