There is a well known XP Luna Theme you can get all over the place, I think the origin may be Deviant Art. Anyway when I've installed it the Start Menu and the icons and the Bliss wallpaper look fine. But the taskbar isn't correct. The color looks correct, but the texture is wrong. It doesn't look like the XP taskbar.

I have installed Classic Shell too.

I'm not totally clear on whether or not you MUST patch your Windows 7 files before even monkeying with this thing. Please advise on that too.

Am I doing something wrong?

Okay I got it going better now. What I wonder about now is the window color when I click on an icon and watch the program open sure looks a little like the Aero look. And I shut off that service in Services.

But maybe it's supposed to look that way. Been so long ago that I used the actual XP OS that I can't remember what the window color really looked like.

Which service? Turning off any Theme related service will give unexpected/broken results on modern versions of Windows. Skinning of elements won't work at all.

Yes, you must patch your system files before using third party themes. And unfortunately, the windows controls won't look the same on Windows 8 and up since you must use DWM and DWM has special rules for theming that make it impossible to make themes look exactly like you want (themes have to look a bit like Aero).

The only thing Classic Shell will theme is the taskbar. If you don't want it themed, uncheck that option in Classic Shell settings. If you're still having issues, Classic Shell isn't the problem.
