Start button became inactive means none of the menus opened - not Classic Start Menu, nor Windows Start Menu? Try installing it again and Shift+clicking it or Shift+Win key and see if either menu is opening. Also, right click the Start button to open Classic Start Menu settings. Make sure on the Controls tab (All Settings enabled), left click opens and Windows key opens are set correctly. Also, go to the "Start Button" tab in Settings, and check if toggling "Replace Start Button" makes a difference. You will need to logoff Windows and logon back after toggling "Replace Start Button" for changes to take effect.
