[if this is wrong section, please move this post]

After numerous attempts to find a Good-old-XPlike Search utility, my quest is over!

Freeware, no indexing, XP-like - No more Everything, Agent Rancsack etc - XSearch is The One!

Another good free one is FileLocator Lite (rebranded version of Agent Ransack): http://www.mythicsoft.com/filelocatorlite and another commercial one is FileSearchEX: http://goffconcepts.com/products/filesearchex/

You haven't stumbled upon Search Agent Ransack yet, huh?

It goes way back. Very simple and very advanced; you can do anything with it. It's freeware, and I think it's put out by some very prestigious company; I don't know much about that. Agent Ransack became quite geek-popular quite a few years ago when there was word that Microsoft was somehow seeing and saving people's private search data. Agent Ransack didn't do that.

You know, way back in the days when such thoughts were considered paranoia, amongst the snowdons of yesteryear.

I also liked Everything, for a while, it was very simple, though i wish it had better integration with windows :P (like could replace it entirely, but where users would still type search terms in the search box for every window, also it was just a little to basic, i ended up settling with ransack cause of all the advanced features.. but everything is definitely the fastest :P

Everything is simply superb, I use it a lot (have assigned Ctrl+Shift+F) to open its window. But it doesn't do content search, nor network shares. So I use 3 programs to search now depending on the type:
- Indexed stuff (Classic Start Menu which has Windows Search integration)
- Non-indexed file name only search (Everything)
- Non-indexed search with contents using IFilters (FileLocator Pro)
- Indexed search on the network (Add those shares to Libraries and then use Windows Search/Classic Start Menu)
- Non-indexed search on the network for contents (FileLocator Pro) :D
