A couple of times double click opening of Word files in Explorer window results in documents opening in Word 2007 - instead of my current Word 2013. The first time was following an update of Classic Shell. When this dawned on me, and after tinkering around with file assocs to no avail, I uninstalled Classic Shell and rebooted. No more problem. On reinstalling CS with updates disabled - continuing happiness until today. Docs open in Word 2007 again. Same procedure - uninstall CS, reboot, reinstall fixed issue.

When glitch occurs, starting Word 2013 then opening document from file open dialogue navigation works correctly.

Which Windows OS are you using? Classic Shell does not affect default programs on the system, nor does it change Word file associations. See this article for more info about using multiple versions of Office installed side-by-side: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2784668 The issue might be with Windows Installer and which version of Word you ran the last time.

You can add the NoReReg registry value for your installed versions of Word as that article above mentions.

I'm using Win7 64-bit. I'll read the info at link - but in the meantime can I safely uninstall Office 2007? That would seem to be an option. Odd that installation of Office 2013 didn't disable it.

Yes uninstalling Office 2007 should allow you to set Office 2013 as the default from Default Programs Control Panel.
