Is there a way to start apps from the Classic desktop? If there is a way I would be glad if someone explained how to do it!

On Windows 8 Classic Shell has an extra sub-menu called Apps. You can launch apps from there.

whats the difference between that & pinned items?

is that a flyout button? or just a column?

and if its a column, does it only scroll or can it expand into multiple columns when filled up?

It works exactly the same way as the Programs sub-menu.

@BlackTempest, By "apps" you mean Modern apps? And by "classic Desktop" do you mean purely the Desktop and not the Start Menu? There is a way to do that as well using a free tool called OblyTile: http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-pin-mode ... e-taskbar/
