It has been reported by another person with Intel onboard card, but he was running the Russian ISO.
It works for me with Nvidia card.

Let's hope that it is a defect driver and intel release for the 8.1 suitable one...

Same issue.

Running on the English Windows 8.1 preview (updated from windows 8 from the windows store), with an AMD Radeon HD 7950 video card, using up-to-date drivers provided with the catalyst suite.

Here's a screenshot of normal usage -
and the bug -

I haven't seen this in earlier versions of Classic Shell, and I can't seem to pinpoint when the bug occurs. It seems to happen roughly 1/4 of the time, and sometimes the bold text doesn't show until you hover over the link.

Edit: I actually installed the drivers for Windows 8, but I see that AMD released drivers specifically for Windows 8.1. I'll try them and see if it fixes the problem. Also I noticed there are a few threads on this already, sorry.

When you say "haven't seen this in earlier versions of Classic Shell", were they running on Windows 8.1?

Yes, I had tested Classic Shell 3.6.7 on this machine running Windows 8.1 before it was updated to 3.6.8 and I didn't notice this issue. Also, installing the video card drivers for 8.1 didn't fix it.

This is because the previous version is not integrated with the new Start button. I have found that failures occur only when clicks in a certain area start button. If you have Intel Core processor - it's likely you have a video card on-board Intel HD Graphics + your discrete videocard for 3D.

I have an Intel i7-3930k processor, but no on-board video card. I have a dedicated AMD Radeon HD 7950. You may be right about the click location; I can't seem to trigger it except from those locations.

is it every click in those locations and no clicks outside of them?, are you both using the same icon, have you tried a different icon, with a different size maybe try something with no transparency, ifnot please try and reply with your results?

try changing the scale of the button to ridiculously oversized, so it definitely covers the entire area that the windows 8.1 start area would occupy

try setting it to 400 pixels in size?
im thinking that this 'danger zone' is the result of clicking both the classic shell icon, and the new 8.1 icon somehow....

Still occurs with the image scaled much higher. You might be on to something about the double menu click, but I don't think changing the scale of the button affects the actual clickable area (only the image itself). It definitely does make sense though. Perhaps the developer can expand the area and send me an executable with the fix applied so I could test it? :D

My theory was that the 'danger zone' is because the windows 8.1 button is larger than the 'visible' area of the classic shell icon (but not larger than the icon itself)
but since an oversized button didn't resolve the issue.. i have absolutely no idea why the center of the icon is a 'safezone' and the 'dangerzone' even exist

Though i'm not the developer, so hopefully someone can figure it out :P

Your theory makes sense (and is probably the issue), but changing the size of the icon only resizes the icon image and doesn't change the actual "clickable area" that the image occupies if you get what I mean. Guess we'll have to wait for word from the developers. :P

The clickable area is equivalent to the item size, try setting it to something like 500, so the icon is taking like 1/8th of the screen, you can still click that icon on any visible part.. atleast in w 8.0
so unless thats changed with 8.1...

Aha, then that's the issue. Unless I did it wrong? I changed the "Button size" option to 200 and it just resized the image.

Edit: You were right. When I right-click the bottom left it brings up the original options instead of classic shell's options. So it seems that classic shell is inside a "window" in the original menu in Windows 8.1.

Edit 2: Pictures here.

I have this issue as well. It seems apparent no matter what video card drivers you have.
I'm on Windows 8.1 Preview 64-bit using nVidia's latest Geforce drivers.
I have no built-in graphics.

The issue only seems to occur when the focused object on the screen is an explorer window (or textbox? or something not so specific?) and then you click in the "danger area" a few posts up. I know my web browser focused and some programs don't seem to produce it.

I am using a different image as well. My danger area is still the same, however.

Don't mind my shameless taskbar advertising ;)
