Hey guys, I recently noticed this and I hope this is not a repost as I haven't noticed anything similar.

Often when I open the start menu, the "Apps" menu is highlighted and I have to right-click and click on remove highlight. Any ideas what this is?

Screenshot:

(The screenshot shows it highlighted while my cursor is not on it. It's highlighted from the moment I open the start menu, without any action of mine).

Apps menu gets highlighted if there are new apps installed. If you are on Windows 10, that bad OS has a habit of automatically downloading and installing apps from the Store without user consent to promote them in the hope that the user will start using them.

You can turn off the setting "Highlight newly installed apps" from the General Behavior tab of Start Menu Settings. This should make the Start menu stop highlighting the Apps folder even if new apps are installed. This won't affect the highlighting of desktop programs.

Hi Gaurav,

Thanks for the reply.

This was also happening on Windows 8.1. Now that I know why it's happening, I guess I don't mind. Though how do I stop these Modern Apps from installing themselves?
