Hi

Can anyone recommend an archiving application (or 'status'?) that works within Windows Explorer?

Let me explain:
I want to have a folder that appears at the bottom of every listing of folders to where I can drag any file that I've finished with but which I still need to keep in case it's useful later on. In order not to get in the way visually it should look like the last folder in the list of folder and files within the current folder.
And then if I cant find the file(s) I'm looking for I should be able to click on the Archive section to see all the files. OR perhaps there is just a global button visible in all directories in Windows Explorer that toggles showing/hiding all 'Archived' files in the current directory.

Does that make sense?
Has anyone built such a thing?
Or is there some better way of archiving that I haven't thought of?

With thanks

J

P.S. Out of desperation, I have now created a folder called "zz_archive" in most of my folders. And files that are old and unlikely (but possible) to be needed I drag and drop them into these folders. This works but it feels very clunky.

Sorry about the delayed response, I was going to respond earlier (when you first posted)but Ive been busy :P

Anyways this might be a preferable option for you

You can select files, right click go to properties and mark them as hidden.

To toggle viewing hidden files follow this tutorial,
then create a new toolbar button with a link to that file

Plausible although it's a shame it cant be done directly off the Properties menu (given that I would be doing this a LOT!)

Which tutorial?

http://www.askvg.com/create-simple-script-to-show-hide-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows-xp-vista-and-7/

Sorry must have forgot to paste it :P
and it is done directly off the properties dialog?, the only thing that changes is whether or not your computer is set to view the hidden files or not
You can alternately go to tools>folder options and change the "View Hidden Options" setting, though from your usecase It would be best to have a button on your toolbar to do this :P
