In windows Vista 64 I was able to press cntrl and click the apps on taskbar, select a few then pick tile or cascade and they would open all at same time on screen. It may have been called open side by side etc.

I do not see a way to do the same on classic shell or window 8. I run multiple copys of same game and manually resizenig each window is a constant pain.

Is there some way to tile them?

Aero Snap is one way of tiling them. Drag the title bar to the sides of the screen. Once the mouse pointer touches the left or right edges of the screen, they will be snapped (or tiled).

Or use 7+ Taskbar Tweaker's Taskbar Inspector feature. It lets you select running windows and Tile vertically, Tile horizontally, cascade them etc.
