Good day,

I was wondering if Windows Defender needs to be disabled when using this software. I can't seem to enable it after installation.

Sorry if this has been answered somewhere before but I searched to no avail. If you could please assist me or let me know the proper way of turning it on in Windows 8. Or any information relative to this topic.

Other then that this software is the best thing out there, thanks so much for making it. Keep up the good work!

PS: Not sure if I am in the right forum section, was not sure where else to post.

Classic Shell should work with Defender enabled. It can be enabled from Action Center by turning on messages about virus/spyware protection.

I see, thank you for your answer GauravK.

I think I figured why Windows Defender has been turned off and why I can't seem to turn it on.

I just bought this PC and it came with 30 days of Norton antivirus for free. I'm guessing that if Norton is running, Windows Defender is not necessary and therefore turned off.

Could someone confirm that for me? Also does anyone know any other antivirus software that is good/free or at a relatively good price that I can replace Norton with once it expires?

not sure about norton specifically, but most antivirus's conflict with eachother, so it would be wise of them to turn of any others

Thanks again Jcee, I might just use that when this Norton expires.

Windows Defender slows down file system performance in Windows a lot (even the one built into Windows 8). For me, free version of Avast is the most lightweight but your mileage could vary.

ah does it? nvm I'm sure it does its windows after all.. lol
i heard the search/indexing slowed down windows quite a bit to, but i didn't notice either (yes i actually tried stopping and starting both)
I guess on my old p4 (2.5ghz) with 512mb ram, I did have to turn off any virus protection when i played games or it would lag on me.. but nowadays you can get a decent duel core (2.7ghz) for around 100$..

I'm actually surprised nowadays how much i could stuff on my 20gb hd (yes i had to clean it monthly); nowadays i run an i5 quad @ 3.1ghz, with 16gb ram, 128gb ssd, and about 5tb of external storage. Im using about 3.5tb of it now :P

Hmm well this is primarily my work laptop so I might check out Avast and see how that will work, or see if Windows Defender does slow down my machine significantly. I did try to run some games on here and to my surprise this machine is quite a beast.
