I thought I had got rid of the ribbon but after going back to the standard Win 9 home screen by accidentally running an "app", when I returned to the Desktop, the ribbon now appears in Explorer. I have done Google searches and checked the Help Menu but cannot find how to get rid of the menu. Please help.

Get the Ribbon Disabler from Winaero: http://winaero.com/download.php?view.18 but note that it patches a system file, so use it at your own risk. We don't officially endorse it. If something goes wrong on your system or Windows breaks, no one else including us or its developer can be held responsible. :)

Actually, CTRL-F1 seems to do the trick. I know that the ribbon is still there, but at least it's hidden, like a cockroach in the basement ...

Yeah Ctrl+F1 will collapse the Ribbon. But you won't get your good old menu bar back unless you disable it.
