Apps like Store and PC settings have migrated to the top level of the program menu. Is there a way to get them back to the app menu? Windows 8 Pro, Classic Start menu 3.6.8. Have tried dragging and dropping but doesnt appear to work.

That's where Windows has decided to place those shortcuts. I don't recommend you try to move them or delete them. You may break the apps.

Well technically they are just shortcuts so moving them won't break the target app. For Windows 8, what I did was I moved those shortcuts to %Localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Application Shortcuts\<subfolder> (create a 'Store' folder inside %Localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Application Shortcuts) for the Store shortcut, and %Localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Application Shortcuts\PCSettings (the folder can be named anything actually). For Windows 8.1, there are even more shortcuts like that in the top level Programs folder.

I just like having Apps separate from Programs, can't tolerate them getting mixed so moving them to Application Shortcuts folder works very well.

Thanks all maybe I'm developing some form of OCD. Will see what happens when Win 8.1 comes along.

@GauravK - Metro apps have what's called "preferred link". If that link is gone the app might break. Even if the app is technically installed you may not be able to access it.

@banger - you are in for a surprise in 8.1. There are even more apps in the Programs folder...

Is this preferred link thingy documented anywhere or its undocumented?

Anyways, Classic Start Menu could hide them since they are also shown in Apps. StartIsBack hides them. It's redundant and CSM already hides the Desktop app.

I don't think it's documented. I have discovered some of that behavior with trial and error. It is very possible I don't fully understand all the details.

In Classic Shell 4.0.2, there is a setting "Hide app shortcuts" on the Main menu tab to hide them from the Programs folder. They will continue to show in the Apps folder.
