It might be nice if you could temporarily enable hot corners, and that thing that makes the mouse catch on the bottom pixel, by holding shift (or maybe some other hotkey)

Well, if you are going to be reaching for the keyboard, you might as well use the hotkey - like Win+C for charms, Win+D for desktop, Win+X for menu, etc.

I can't find Win+C or "charms" in Win7. What's a charm? Is this a Win8 hotkey? Should Win7 have it?

Yes this is a Windows 8 hotkey to show the commands on the right side added in Windows 8. You aren't missing any important if you are on Windows 7.

Shift is far easier to hit than the windows key (arguably the easiest excluding home row and spacebar) from the left side of the keyboard. (the left hand generally rest on asdf)
that combined with the fact that a hotkey takes 2 fingers.. Its just far easier to hold down shift in my opinion, and it synergizes well with the already available options..

Also people with hot-corners disabled may not use them enough to know the hotkey by heart.
