I'm looking for original / almost original XP explorer toolbar buttons:

back, forward, properties, one level up, stop, etc.

I've scoured XP for icons, using Icon Extractor etc. looked through 10000+ icons, couldn't find them.

Can anybody tell me where the original ones can be found within XP ? If not, then perhaps closely resembling replicas on the net somewhere?

I'd like to use them in classic shell / explorer in Win 7.

And, this pinned download link doesn't currently work:

#EDIT# ... it does work with 7-zip 15.06

Thanks.

The XP toolbar icons aren't really icons, they are images stored in XP's shell32.dll. You could extract them with Resource Hacker but they will need to be turned into icons and they are really tiny compared to today's resolutions.

Here are some toolbar button icons: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2056 but they're more Vista/7-style.

One year ago i downloaded those XP toolbar buttons from somewhere on this site.

A shame they can't be found anymore. Could it be the non-functioning link from post #1 above ?

It is possible, the post being 2 years old. To bad that its corrupted...

If you are a fan of Windows XP style icons, some design hobbyist recreated them in 256 x 256 size on Deviantart!:

If you noted, there is a hyperlink here that might be relevant^ in the original post, but It only seems to have 15~ icons (and be 1.5mb, whereas the .rar was 8mb, which implies that it contained more)

It is not corrupted. It is RAR5 format. Use the latest WinRAR or 7-Zip 15.06.

I just installed 7zip about a week ago.. and it wouldn't let me extract it.. Haven't tried winrar though (maybe if you can successfully unzip it, you could re-zip it as a .zip and re-attach?)

tried switching to new 15.06 7-zip, and it now worked. unfortunately, there are no xp explorer toolbar buttons in that package.

i've just used resource hacker as suggested in post # 2 to extract images of some of the most important buttons. i have cropped them and converted to .png. they're all around 20-24 by 20-24 pixels, which is small, but fine with me. I want all the buttons in original size and aspect ratio.

i then tried about 10 different online .png to .ico converters. but they all distort images that don't have 1:1 ratios, which most of those buttons don't have.

example: one of the buttons: "properties" is 18 by 23 pixels, all the converters distorted it; either change in number of pixels, or flat/rectangular pixels (original pixels are all squares)

anybody knows how to convert .png images properly to .ico files?

Oh wow.. I hadn't realized that the stable version of 7zip is so-far behind the beta.... I installed the stable because the last beta version of 7zip i had was a bloody mess, but I guess ill stick to this beta if it isnt to buggy...

BUMP! 8-)

I wanted exactly what the original poster of this thread was asking for... the Windows XP Explorer Toolbar icons.

I found either dead links, or icons that looked less than perfect (no disrespect to anyone who tried!).

So, I made my own. I got them as 1:1 as I could, and I think they look pretty dead on! ;)

Here's the link (it's a download from Google Drive):
https://goo.gl/MqSStW

The file is also attached to this post! ;)

I bumped the thread because it's a top Google search result and I just wanted for people to be able to find a good result in the future. :)

From the readme:

These icons are 25x25; the files that are appended _small are 16x16

To use the regular 25x25 icons in Classic Shell Explorer, use these settings
on the "Toolbar Settings" tab:

Big Buttons: Checked
Small icon size: 16
Large icon size: 25
Menu icon size: 16
Text is on the side: Unchecked
Same size buttons: Checked
Resizeable toolbar: Checked

Individually specify the regular 25x25 icon files for each toolbar button.

If you want to use the _small icons, then UNCHECK the "Big buttons" check box,
and individually specify the icons files appended with _small.

(If you use 25x25 and uncheck "Big buttons," or use 16x16 and check "Big
buttons," then the icons will be scaled, reducing image quality.)

I recommend the following sites for .ico conversion from png with
transparencies:
http://image.online-convert.com/convert-to-ico

You can use the following site to batch convert 25x25 icons to 16x16 with good
quality:
http://convertico.com/
