The new version adds support for Windows 8.1 preview.

This is the first version to support Windows 8.1.
This is the last version to support Windows Vista.

Windows Vista is no longer supported because of the addition of:

1. Frequently used app list to Classic Start Menu (whose UserAssist algorithm changed in Windows 7/8 vs Vista)
2. Windows Search 4 integration APIs which are only available in Windows 7
3. Some Windows Installer 5.0 features
4. Very few users on Windows Vista

Next major release is Classic Shell 4.0

On installed older versions, will there be a conflict when Microsoft releases version 8.1?

yea basically tenzen; they even complained about the old shell icon, because it apparently 'borrowed design elements from windows 7' specifically the flag-ish shape, and the pattern

True to the Microsoft Omniscience Complex

Tyrannical Bullies

I'd take it to Court.. Challenge the Patent System.. they prefer us also henceforth to use flapinbo in place of "Word", and other such flapinbos such as Excel need to be changed to Poroush, so individuals like us can learn to Poroush by using our own dam flapinbos and stop infringing on totalitarian microcraps world dominion and supremacy..

@take to court;
1. its easier just to change the icon...
2. it actually was similar to microsoft's logo..
3. In a US court he would have probably lost the case.. (microsoft having expensive lawyers and all)
4. its easier just to change the icon... (yes im repeating)

Well, I guess I just won't upgrade until those options are restored officially or via an add-on.

Good thing I still have the old installer, I will be sharing that around.

I would also like to see scans or transcripts of any communications Microsoft felt fit to serve you with.

which 2? the metro button and?..
There will likely never be any 'official' support on using the old metro button.. but it has been posted on the forums, and its not that hard to re-add it

not sure what the other option you want is?

well, they did you a favor.. the old shell sucks .. your shell looks way better now.. the windows panes give me a headache whenever I see them..in fact, they should ban Rubik's cubes too.. they seem also to have "borrowed elements" from Microsoft Windows..

In fact, i've starting calling all of the glass panes separating the interior from the exterior of my house, Glass, to avoid using the word windows.. they can have that word too

but you should have had a Shell Icon Contest to see what other people came up with...

actually, i've got a few mockups, of different shell concepts i might be posting(pending Ivo's permission as a few of them are updates on his designs), and i did suggest a contest to ivo :P, though from my experience contest don't generally work to well with an active user base this size..
actually it wasn't the colors, it was the order of the colors.., and the fact that that there is a wave in the horizontal bar..
funny though the design of windows 8's has no real distinguishable characteristics.. (it is the generic oversimplification of a window at an angle)
also microsoft is rather conservative when it comes to the term 'windows' , and wont rush to a lawsuit, mostly over fear of loosing grasp of the term

Actually it is MS who would get sued in that scenario. I was having solving-time contests with friends in... 1985. Well before Windows.

At first I did not use the new icon. I just downloaded the old metro icon that was removed but there were things that I did not like about it with misaligned start icon and spacing. I decided to try the new shell icon and I actually like it better than the old metro icon.

Thanks for changing the shell icon, the new one is much cleaner and easier on the eyes. When I first saw the icon with the Microsoftian window pane in the middle I thought -- it's only a matter of time before some Microsoft Lawyer says something. Also I wouldn't be surprised if the default "start" button added back into windows 8.1 RTM looks something like your design, haha!

Thanks for putting together such an awesome free product. I actually use this shell on Win 7, Windows 2008, Windows 2012, and Windows 8. I'd probably use it on Vista too if I had a need for that buggy piece of garbage -- which I don't. The only computer that I don't use it on is my old legacy XP machine which I hardly every use anymore. Classic Shell does everything I'd want to do if I were writing it myself, and then some!

In version 3.6.8 - Modified the Classic Shell logo and removed the Metro button by request from Microsoft

I want to update but was wondering, can I keep "their" button? ;)

I would recommend you upgrade to 3.9.5. It uses the native button in Windows 8.1.

The Metro button which was removed is available in our forums: http://www.classicshell.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=802
