Hello. Under the address bar history setting I selected normal history.

My query is, where does Classic Shell get the items that it displays here from?

In the jumplists settings for Windows 8 I have disabled both recent programs and recent items, so would hope that Windows itself is not still keeping a list somewhere of folders I have recently visited. So is CS maintaining its own folder history?

It doesn't get it from anywhere. It just leaves whatever Windows puts in the list.
Classic Shell only handles the other two options - simple path and extended path.

OK, so CS is not responsible here, something within Win 8 is still saving a "visited folders" history. Fair enough, that helps me diagnose things a bit more.

Btw, the keyboard shortcut for address bar history is F4. Also, you can right click the address bar and select "Delete history" to clear it. Set deny Registry permissions on the Reg key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TypedPaths to stop maintaining it.
