A friend of mine has a Dell Alienware computer. She's quite old, but relatively computer-savvy. I told her about Classic Shell and she said a Dell service tech told her "make sure you don't download any software to alter Windows 10 or you won't be under your warranty" and now she's afraid to try CS. Could that be true?

That's certainly not true. First, you can't void the warranty by installing software. Second, Classic Shell does not alter any Windows files.

Certain brands like HP, Dell find any excuse to not honor your warranty. HP refused to honor my laptop's warranty just for changing the OS from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 on one of them. Classic Shell does not do permanent modifications of any kind to Windows. When you uninstall it, its effects are gone. Still, companies like Dell, HP may not understand or care about this so if you think installing it will void your warranty, simply uninstall it before giving it for repair. You can reinstall Classic Shell any time later and all your earlier settings will be preserved anyway.
