Hi all

I was wondering ( try to find if any exists in vain ) how to have a floating " start menu skin under CSM ?

I mean with an empty space where we could see the desktop between top of star menu and the taskbar ( mine is top sided as shown in the screenshot

Yes it can be done (ive done it before, in an attempt at bezel correction) however you need to edit the .skin file quite a bit to get it to look good.

clrSharp2 Glass revB.skin has menu floating at bottom.


The classic Metro.skin could be modified to have it float.

Increase menu bitmap size to include invisible portion (0 alpha)
Increase the bitmap dimension slices to match new size.
Increase main padding, to push the text further down.
Increase padding for name /user picture.

Here is simple example Metro Float.skin to learn from, and personalize your way.
Only two column has float option.
I did not test every funtion. function.
I did not check for spelling mistakes.

I'm bad. Sorry,
I should have modded a simple glass color masked skin for you.
Thing about Metro skin, is it follows Windows 8 startscreen/10 system color, not glass color.
To change color, would take awhile to figure out. A lot of people have done it though.
Can alter all the dark1/dark2 shade's text in skin file, and put as darker dark2/dark3.

Or if you don't want any color at all,
here is dark grey sample. There will still be a small amount of glass color showing through.
To get rid of it, in CSM settings, set "Override glass color " to black,
or set Glass opacity to 0.

OK, over to you to play, and turn into your personal preferences.

I'd like to keep the original settings and have a mixed skin with the one you provided ( with floating feature )

I'm far from being as skilled as you are lol with CSM and there are too many settings in editing skins I'm not aware or used to ah ah and time is not my best friend actually ( I'm planning to switch actual job for September and get me worried but I have no choice other than work on future project to earn my life lol )

That said , don't hesitate to ask for a personal custom visual style you'd like to use daily under windows ( 10 mostly ) I can set up some with special picture in explorer background or right context menu as you know I like to do for my own use

My comprehension is not good sometimes.
If the screenshot is of Metro Glass by Van SN-2016,
you've got it working already, some how using combination of a theme file?

Is it that you want a stand alone exact same skin, but with the invisible 25 pixels/15 pixels?
I can leave his skin just the same way, except for the added bitmaps,
and text at bottom of file, to make it work. Making the bitmaps easy. Adding all the padding combinations takes some time.

Do you want skin to have caption, and single column menu float as well?

If so, I'm not sure if you want me to make exactly as original, or not.
The reason is, single menu uses a different bitmap with color mask,
and caption menu uses regular menu, but without color mask?
Also the original padding changes, with or without user picture.
They look to be errors?
I think I will add the float option for caption/single, and disregard the errors in original skin.

Ever since updating to Win 10 Creators update, I'm staying away from any themes,
until MS fixes some things that went wrong after update.
There are a couple things not compatible using CSM as well.
I did like that very fine detailed black, and white background picture of that girl way back.

oh yes I'd like to keep the original Van SN skin and important to me the transparent opacity it gives in both main and 2d columns to sub menus and just make it floating with free space between taksbar on top and left edge as seen on my initial screenshot.

Reason is I'm currently using a dark visual style mostly smoked looking ( I feel more cumfortable and for eyes strain reduce )

Third time's a Charm?

I matched the same transparency 119 alpha as main bitmap. Did not touch anything of original.
All the added text at bottom of file. Added bitmaps are #23, #24.

I think I got it correct. If you don't want the bottom option, just put the " ; "
in front of option to stop it showing.
If anything, I like using top option with bottom taskbar, with only the gap on side.
It's like the Win-X context menu.


I did not make Hidpi bitmaps, with 1.5 times invisible area. Let me know if required.


If Van SN has objections, I will delete the modded skin.

I googled the girl way back, and was using already.

So yes third works like a charm ! you can easily see how this way it fits nicely with my smoke theme

I'm using a very useful app made by a friend Shawn ( the sidebar on the right ) "Panels" who add some features to my taste as windows 10 virtual desktop support and introduced it on my former youtube channel

it allows also to get rid of native taskbar , so with your useful help I will give a look to change some values to move floating menu coordinates if I decide to hide definitively taskbar to only use Panels and reduce top margin:)

hmm I was working as M.D for years and have to go through since I realized lot of things went wrong lol but my next project is medical related though , I just started but time will tell and I give you some word in next months to tell you what is all about , expect to be surprised :p
